Government Shutdown Averted
If it were a storybook, it would have been two kids on opposite ends of a rope playing tug-of-war, with neither kid winning by the time their parents called them inside for dinner. The kids reached a quick agreement that it was a tie and would play again at some point in the future.
Thus went the negotiations in the Senate until late Thursday, with a government shutdown imminent. The result was an agreement to fund all agencies through the end of the year, with one exception: the Department of Homeland Security. The agreement provides two weeks of funding to the DHS while the children give another go at their tug-of-war.
Now that the Senate and White House have reached an agreement, the House still needs to vote, but since the House had already approved a prior bill, approval appears imminent.
We will update this article once the necessary votes are complete.
